KRISTEN HAASE, M.A.
Kristen Haase is an English Lancaster Development teacher for the School District of Lancaster in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where she also serves as the ELD team leader and is a member of her school’s leadership team. With 20 plus years of serving the students and families of the School District of Lancaster, she is also a mentor to new teachers. In addition, she is an alumna of Teach Plus Pennsylvania. Teach Plus empowers excellent, experienced, and diverse teachers to take leadership over key policy and practice issues that advance equity, opportunity, and student success. She has written a number of op-eds advocating for her students as well as the students of Pennsylvania. Most recently, she has co-authored “Bolstering Vocabulary with Teacher Talk: Strategic Modeling to Elevate Students’ Language." Along with her co-author, Dr. Carmen Shahadi Rowe, she has presented at numerous conferences including
PennTESOL East and MATSOL. She has also taught Second Language Acquisition classes at Millersville University and ESL classes at Harrisburg Area Community College. She also served as an education consultant and instructor for the Lancaster- Lebanon IU 13. She graduated from the University of Delaware with a BA in Spanish Education and International Relations and received her MA in TESOL from West Chester University.
CARMEN SHAHADI ROWE, Ed.D
Carmen Shahadi Rowe is the founder of Accelerating Language, LLC. The company’s mission is to equip educators with skills and strategies for developing robust academic language for all students. Accelerating Language provides a wide range of services including professional development, coaching, and consulting, as well as products. Dr. Rowe has over twenty years of experience in public education. She served as an ESL Coordinator, ESL Secondary Supervisor, an ESL Instructional Coach, and a teacher of Spanish and ESL, K-12. In addition to her experience in public education, Dr. Rowe has almost two decades of experience teaching graduate courses for teachers in training. She has published articles, contributed a chapter to the book entitled, “Composing Storylines of Possibilities: Immigrant and Refugee Families Navigating School,” and co-authored the book, “Bolstering Vocabulary with Teacher Talk in the Classroom: Strategic Modeling to Elevate Students’ Language.” Dr. Rowe has broadened her horizons through studying abroad and traveling extensively, but her best education has come from being a first generation American born to immigrant and refugee parents.
